Who was Reb Levik?
Reb Levi Yitzchok Schneerson (1878–1944), “Reb Levik,” was the father of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. He was a great gaon and mekubal, and the Rav of the city of Yekaterinoslav.
When the Communists tried to uproot Yiddishkeit, he kept teaching Torah and helping Jews keep the mitzvos, openly and without fear. For this he was arrested and exiled to a small village in Kazakhstan. Even there he never stopped learning and writing his insights in Kabbalah and Chassidus; his wife, Rebbetzin Chana, made ink from plants so that he could keep writing.
He passed away in exile on 20 Menachem Av 5704 (1944). His yahrzeit is 20 Menachem Av.
